Evin Prison, Political prison in Tehran, Iran
Evin Prison extends across multiple buildings in northern Tehran, featuring separate sections controlled by different governmental agencies and security forces.
The prison, constructed in 1971 during Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi's rule, expanded from housing 320 inmates to over 1,500 inmates by 1977.
Iranian authorities refer to the facility as 'Evin University' due to the large number of students, intellectuals, and academics detained within its walls.
Section 209 and Section 240 operate independently under different security organizations, with distinct protocols and conditions for political detainees.
In October 2022, a fire erupted during nationwide protests, resulting in eight reported casualties and requiring military intervention to restore control.
