Tus, Ancient city in Mashhad County, Iran
Tus is an ancient city in Khorasan province made up of four main sections: Tabran, Radakan, Noan, and Teroid. The ruins sit at about 1000 meters elevation near present-day Mashhad and contain multiple archaeological sites and historical structures.
In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great conquered Tus, which later became an important point on the Silk Road trading network. The city flourished during this period as a major commercial hub in the region.
The Ferdowsi mausoleum of 1934 stands at the heart of the city and honors the Persian poet who composed the epic Shahnameh. For visitors, the site represents a connection to Persian literary traditions and national identity.
