Gargar Bridge-Dam, Iranian national heritage site
The Gargar Bridge-Dam is a stone and brick structure that spans the Gargar River in Shushtar, Iran. It features simple arches and is part of a larger network of water channels, mills, and reservoirs that managed flow for farming and flood protection.
The dam was built during the Sassanid period as part of an ancient engineering system. Later repairs during the Safavid era strengthened the structure and maintained its function for centuries.
The bridge-dam shows the deep connection local communities have with water management and engineering. People still live and work around these waterways today, keeping the traditions of the area alive.
The site is located near central Shushtar and is easy to reach for visitors. The area is peaceful and offers good conditions for walking around and observing the water channels and old stonework.
Ancient watermills near the dam still show traces of their past use for grinding grain and other purposes. These mills reveal how water was channeled for multiple practical needs beyond simple irrigation.
