Helgafell

Helgafell is a volcanic mountain on Heimaey island rising approximately 227 meters above sea level with steep slopes and dark volcanic rock throughout. The summit offers views across the entire Vestmannaeyjar archipelago and the surrounding North Atlantic waters.

The volcano formed roughly 4000 years ago during an extended eruption lasting several months. This makes it one of the island group's oldest volcanic formations and a foundation for much of the current landscape.

The name means Holy Mountain in the local language, showing how early Norse settlers viewed this natural landmark with reverence. Visitors can sense this spiritual connection through the way the place sits in the community's relationship with the island.

Multiple marked hiking trails lead from the base to the summit with varying difficulty levels. The terrain is rocky throughout, so sturdy footwear and a sure footing are important for a safe visit.

Just a short distance away stands Eldfell, a much younger volcano that suddenly emerged from the sea in 1973. The contrast between the ancient formation and the recent arrival shows the ongoing volcanic activity of this island group.
