Gljufrafoss

Gljufrafoss, Waterfall in Southern Region, Iceland

Gljufrafoss is a waterfall in southern Iceland where the Gljufura River drops 40 meters into a gorge behind a massive cliff face. The cascade sits within a natural rock cavity, creating a sheltered chamber that frames the falling water.

The name comes from Old Norse language elements referring to its concealed location within the canyon system of the Eyjafjöll mountain range. The landscape took its present form through millennia of water and frost working on the bedrock.

Local Icelandic folklore associates the waterfall with tales of elves and hidden beings inhabiting the rock chambers. These stories continue to shape how people experience and understand the place today.

Wear waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes, as you must wade through the stream to reach the inner chamber. The water runs cold and footing can be slippery, so secure footwear and careful steps are important.

The waterfall is almost entirely hidden within rock, visible only from inside through a narrow cliff opening. This concealment makes it a surprising discovery for visitors who venture into the rock chamber.
