Gljufrafoss, Waterfall in Southern Region, Iceland
The Gljufrafoss waterfall drops 40 meters from the Gljufura River into a gorge, creating a natural display behind a large cliff formation.
The waterfall's name derives from Old Norse language elements, referring to its location within the canyon system of the Eyjafjoll mountain range.
Local Icelandic folklore connects the waterfall's hidden position to tales of elves and hidden people who were said to dwell in the rocky formations.
Visitors need waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes to wade through the stream and access the inner chamber where the waterfall becomes visible.
The waterfall remains partially concealed within a rock cavity, requiring travelers to enter through a narrow cliff opening to view its full cascade.
