Knarrarós Lighthouse, Historic lighthouse in Sveitarfélagið Árborg, Iceland

Knarrarós Lighthouse is a beacon tower in Sveitarfélagið Árborg on Iceland's southern coast that rises about 22 meters high. The white concrete structure features a square design with black panels between its window rows and is topped with a signaling mechanism that emits regular flashes.

The tower was built between 1938 and 1939 and was Iceland's first reinforced concrete lighthouse, representing a construction innovation of that time. This structure marked the country's transition to modern infrastructure techniques for maritime navigation.

The tower reflects the work of two influential Icelandic architects in its design, blending functional forms with classical modernist elements. Visitors can observe this stylistic approach in the clean lines and distinctive window pattern.

The structure remains active in service today and guides ships with its signal across wide stretches of the southern coast. Visitors should expect windy conditions and wear sturdy footwear, as the surroundings are exposed and weather can change suddenly.

The black panels between the window rows form a distinctive feature that sets this beacon apart from most others. This two-stage square form was a deliberate design choice to make the structure more visible during poor weather conditions.
