Sveitarfélagið Árborg, Administrative district in southern Iceland
Sveitarfélagið Árborg is an administrative district in southern Iceland that brings together several towns and villages under one local government. The territory includes the main town of Selfoss and smaller coastal communities, all functioning as an integrated region with shared services and infrastructure.
The district was formed in 1998 when four separate communities chose to merge and consolidate their local governance and resources. This union allowed the region to coordinate services more effectively and plan for shared growth across the different settlements.
The municipality manages seven preschools, three elementary schools, and supports multiple sports facilities to serve its population of 9,485 residents.
A visitor information center in Selfoss can help you learn about the region and find local recommendations for your stay. The area has good road connections and several public facilities including libraries, swimming pools, and community services that are open to visitors.
Árborg municipality maintains international connections through established twin town relationships with Arendal in Norway, Kalmar in Sweden, and Savonlinna in Finland.
