Skálholt church, Lutheran cathedral in Bláskógabyggð, Iceland
The white stone cathedral stands between the rivers Hvítá and Brúará, featuring a high tower that contains eight bells and ancient manuscripts.
The site served as one of Iceland's two episcopal seats from 1056 to 1785, playing a central role in the country's religious transformation.
The cathedral maintains a collection of religious artifacts, including tombstones from previous bishops and a sarcophagus discovered during archaeological excavations in 1954.
Located 93 kilometers from Reykjavík, the cathedral offers guided tours, cultural events, and summer concerts throughout the year.
An underground tunnel from the 13th century connects to excavated remains of the original bishopric and school beneath the current cathedral structure.
