Skálholt church, Lutheran cathedral in Bláskógabyggð, Iceland

Skálholt church is a white stone cathedral located between the rivers Hvítá and Brúará, featuring a tall tower with eight bells. The building combines modern elements with historical sections that reflect different periods of reconstruction and use.

The site served as one of Iceland's two main episcopal seats from 1056 until 1785, profoundly shaping the country's religious life. After losing its administrative role, it remained an important place of worship and spiritual significance for Icelanders.

The cathedral holds religious objects from its long history, including tombstones of former bishops and items uncovered during excavations. These pieces tell stories of centuries of religious life and learning at this location.

The cathedral sits about 90 kilometers south of Reykjavík and is easily reached by car. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and wear layers, as conditions can shift quickly throughout the day.

An underground passage from the 13th century connects the church to excavated ruins of the original bishop's residence and school beneath it. These remains were uncovered in 1954 and reveal how the complex once functioned as an educational and administrative center.
