Geysir geothermal field

Geysir geothermal field, Geothermal field near Bláskógabyggð, Iceland

Description

Geysir geothermal field is a volcanic area scattered with hot springs, mud pots, and steaming vents across basalt and rhyolite rock formations. Strokkur geyser, the most active feature here, regularly projects water high into the air and draws most visitor attention.

History

The field formed in the late 1200s following strong earthquakes and volcanic activity from Mount Hekla in the Haukadalur valley. These geological events created the thermal conditions that shape the area today.

Culture

The name geyser originates from an Icelandic word meaning to gush or rush forward. Visitors can see how this place has given its name to geothermal fountains around the world.

Practical

The site sits at about 730 meters elevation and features marked pathways that let visitors walk close to the various hot springs and steam vents. Wearing sturdy shoes is important since the ground is hot in many spots and steam rises unpredictably from multiple openings.

Did you know?

The main spring, known as the Great Geysir, has a chamber reaching more than 20 meters deep with a large crater opening. On rare occasions when it erupts, water shoots up to 80 meters high, making it one of the most powerful springs on Earth.
