Strokkur, Geyser in Haukadalur Valley, Iceland

Strokkur is a hot spring in Haukadalur Valley that ejects columns of water at regular intervals, shooting approximately 30 to 40 meters into the air before subsiding back into its pool. The cycle repeats every 6 to 10 minutes throughout the day.

The hot spring came into existence in 1789 following an earthquake that unblocked its water channel and triggered its activity. In the early 1800s, eruptions briefly reached much greater heights before settling into their current regular pattern.

The name comes from the Old Norse word meaning 'to squirt,' reflecting how locals have long understood this dramatic display of nature's power through language and observation.

The site is accessible through marked pathways with viewing platforms and safety barriers positioned around the spring. Wear waterproof clothing and watch for slippery surfaces, as the ground near the eruption area becomes wet and steamy.

Unlike most geothermal springs worldwide, this one displays the same reliable pattern year-round and is remarkably easy to predict. This consistency makes it one of the few places where visitors can watch a natural spectacle unfold with near certainty.
