Þjófafoss

The wide Þjófafoss waterfall cascades through the Þjórsá river, creating white water beneath the dark Mount Búrfell in the Merkurhraun lava field.

Local legends tell that in past centuries, convicted thieves faced execution by being thrown into the waters of Þjófafoss, giving the waterfall its current name.

The waterfall forms part of the Þjórsá river system, which marks the traditional boundary between the districts of Árnessýsla and Rangárvallasýsla.

Visitors can reach Þjófafoss by taking Road 26 from Ring Road 1, followed by a 4-kilometer drive on a gravel path to the parking area.

The water flow of Þjófafoss varies throughout the year due to the upstream Búrfellsstöð power station, which controls the river's water levels.
