Ölfusárbrú, Suspension bridge in Selfoss, Iceland
Ölfusárbrú is a suspension bridge spanning 84 meters across the Ölfusá River, linking different sections of Sveitarfélagið Árborg municipality. The steel structure carries both vehicles and pedestrians over the waterway, serving as a vital transportation link.
An original bridge from 1891 collapsed in 1944 when its bearing cables failed under the weight of two trucks. The current structure was built between 1944 and 1945 to replace the damaged crossing.
The bridge serves as a central meeting point for residents of Selfoss and enhances connections between communities along the Ölfusá River banks.
Traffic can be heavy during agricultural seasons when vehicles move between farming areas, so allow time for busy periods. Pedestrians should watch for vehicles and bring proper weather protection, as conditions can be variable at this exposed crossing.
The new bridge was completed in just five and a half months during 1945 while the old structure was kept under temporary repair. This rapid reconstruction helped the local community restore its economic links quickly.
