Cesena, Administrative commune in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Cesena is a commune in the province of Forlì-Cesena in Emilia-Romagna. The town sits in the Savio river valley, with the Adriatic coast to the east and the first hills of the Apennines to the west.
Roman settlers founded a garrison post here in the third century before Christ. The Malatesta family then ruled between 1379 and 1465, leaving behind buildings from the Renaissance period.
The Malatestiana Library, established during the Malatesta family rule from 1379 to 1465, stands as a primary example of Renaissance period architecture.
The railway station in the center connects the town with the Bologna-Ancona line. Buses run from the station into the neighborhoods and to nearby towns.
Three popes were born here in the 18th and 19th centuries: Pius VI, Pius VII and Pius VIII. The Malatestiana Library preserves manuscripts and codices from the time of the Renaissance.
