Sedico, Italian comune
Sedico is a commune in the Province of Belluno situated on the right bank of the Piave River at the entrance to the Cordevole valley. The town covers roughly 91 square kilometers and is surrounded by tall mountains including Schiara and Monti del Sole, with about two thirds of its territory within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park.
Sedico's roots trace back to ancient times, evidenced by archaeological sites like Castelliere di Noal from the Bronze and Iron Ages. From Venetian rule beginning in the 15th century through unification with Italy in 1866, the town was shaped by timber industry and the exploitation of river waters for mills and transport.
The town's name comes from ancient Celtic roots visible in many local place names throughout the area. The churches and old villas shape the village landscape and reflect a long tradition of community life tied to the valley and its rivers.
Sedico is easily reached via main roads like Strada Statale 50 and 203, and has a train station in Longano on the Padova-Calalzo line. Good walking shoes are recommended as many historical sites and hiking trails cross uneven terrain.
The town's coat of arms features two saw blades commemorating its past as a major timber processing center. These symbols recall the era when rivers were used to transport logs and finished goods throughout Italy and beyond.
