Schio, Industrial commune in Province of Vicenza, Italy

Schio is a commune in the Province of Vicenza in Veneto, Italy, that stretches across the foothills of the Alps at an elevation of around 200 meters (656 feet). The center shows streets lined with residential buildings, shops, and public offices, while the surrounding neighborhoods extend into the gentle slopes of the Alpine foothills.

Archaeological findings from the Neolithic period and settlements of the Paleo-Veneti document the presence of communities here for thousands of years. In the 19th century, the town transformed into a center of the textile industry, which shaped its appearance and economy well into the 20th century.

The use of dialect reflects Venetian influence, which you notice during public gatherings and at the markets. In the cafés around the main square, residents maintain their habit of conversation over espresso, while passersby move between historic façades and contemporary shops.

The main square serves as a central point for orientation, from which most landmarks can be reached on foot. Those who want to explore the area can take streets that lead to the surrounding neighborhoods and toward the hills from here.

A bronze monument from 1879 shows a weaver holding his shuttle and recalls the importance of textile production for the region. The figure stands in a public space and is regarded by locals as a symbol of the industrial past of the town.
