Baronissi, Italian comune
Baronissi is a small town in the Province of Salerno situated in the Irno valley and surrounded by hills. The municipality consists of an older center and the larger neighborhood of Sava, with the landscape featuring gentle hills, green fields, and the river that shapes the terrain.
The town was established in the early 1800s under French influence when Gioacchino Murat and Giuseppe Bonaparte ended feudal rule and founded this community. It grew gradually with new houses and small businesses, while its town hall was rebuilt following the 1980 earthquake.
The town maintains its identity through local festivals where residents gather in traditional dress and display symbols connected to the land. The old center with its hillside houses and the SS Salvatore church reflects how daily life remains rooted in local customs and community gatherings.
The town is easy to explore on foot with small walkable streets and local buses connecting it to nearby communities. Wear comfortable shoes as you will walk up hills and through old streets, especially if you plan to visit the older center and hillside neighborhoods.
Each December the town is decorated with light art installations by artists from Milan's Brera Academy instead of traditional Christmas lights. This yearly transformation turns the old center into an outdoor gallery, visible mainly in the winter season.
