Complesso monumentale di Santa Sofia

The Santa Sofia complex is a medieval monastery in Salerno that spreads across three levels connected by a vaulted staircase. The building features barrel-vaulted halls and long corridors that reflect the monastic design of its era.

The building was founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine monastery and experienced significant transitions when it became a Jesuit residence in 1592. Later it housed Carmelite fathers until 1778, after which it took on new roles.

The church displays decorative stucco, geometric majolica floors, and marble altars that show how religious art changed over time. These crafted details reveal the different communities that lived and worshipped within these walls.

During recent restoration work, a 13th-century window with interlaced patterns was uncovered on the wall facing Via Trotula de Ruggiero. This hidden feature shows how craftspeople of that time worked with care, only to have their details rediscovered through later renovations.
