Arechi Castle, Military fortress on Mount Bonadies, Salerno, Italy
Arechi Castle is a fortress on Mount Bonadies situated approximately 300 meters (985 feet) above sea level, with defensive walls and towers that once guarded the coast. Its elevated position offers views across the Gulf of Salerno and the surrounding landscape.
The site began as a Byzantine structure in the 6th century and was transformed into a Lombard fortress during the 8th century when Prince Arechi II relocated the duchy from Benevento to Salerno. This change made it a key defensive position for the new capital.
The castle displays medieval weapons, ceramics, coins, and glass artifacts that were discovered during restoration work. These objects tell the story of military life and daily activity at this strategic stronghold.
The castle is accessible to visitors on multiple days throughout the week, making it easy to plan a visit. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since the climb to the mountaintop is steep and the ground around the structure can be uneven.
The northwest watchtower, known as the Bastille, reopened in 2001 and offers views extending across the Tyrrhenian Sea. From this restored tower, visitors can see the surrounding mountains and expansive coastline.
