Construction of the theater began on April 1, 1864, and architects Giuseppe Menichini and Antonio D'Amora completed the structure for its inauguration in 1872.
The theater presents regular opera performances, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner, with the Salerno Opera Choir formed by graduates of Conservatorio Martucci.
