Crescent, Waterfront building complex in Salerno, Italy.
The Crescent is a semicircular building on the waterfront of Salerno, in the Santa Teresa district, combining shops, apartments, and public spaces within a single curved structure. It rises seven floors and opens toward Piazza della Libertà through a covered arcade at street level.
Work on the Crescent started in 2011 as part of a broader plan to redesign Salerno's waterfront. Before that, the Santa Teresa area had long sat underused between the city center and the sea.
The curved facade of the Crescent features a row of arches that echo classic southern Italian civic buildings, but built with modern materials. Walking through the covered galleries gives a sense of how the city has tried to bring a familiar urban feel to a newly built waterfront space.
The Crescent sits right next to Piazza della Libertà and is easy to reach on foot from Salerno's center. Parking is available inside the complex, and the ground-floor gallery can be entered freely.
The name Crescent comes from the English word for a half-moon shape, which directly describes the building's curve as seen from the waterfront promenade. From that angle, the structure appears to frame the sea like an open parenthesis.
