Hyblaean Mountains, Mountain range in Province of Ragusa, Italy
The Hyblaean Mountains spread across southeastern Sicily with Monte Lauro standing as the highest peak in the range. Multiple marked trails connect the Baroque towns of Ragusa, Modica, and Palazzolo Acreide through the range.
The range took its name from King Hyblon of the Siculi people, who granted territory to Greek settlers establishing Megara Hyblaea. This early exchange shaped the bond between the region and the ancient world.
The slopes show traditional dry stone walls that display centuries of local building methods woven into the landscape. These walls frame the region and remain part of how people maintain and understand the land around them.
Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky terrain and steep sections found on the trails through the range. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant conditions for walking, with comfortable temperatures and good visibility.
Limestone composition created a karst landscape with deep canyons, caves, and sinkholes through millions of years of erosion. These geological features shape the terrain and offer surprising discoveries while walking through the range.
