Castellina in Chianti, Municipality in Chianti region, Tuscany, Italy
Castellina in Chianti is a commune in the Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy, situated across three river valleys among rolling hills. The territory features vineyards, olive groves, and forests spread across the sloping landscape at around 578 meters in elevation.
In the 11th century, Matilda of Tuscany granted the area, then called Salingolpe, as a feudal estate to the Guidi counts. This connection shaped the political and social development of the region for centuries afterward.
The Archaeological Museum of Chianti in the medieval fortress displays Etruscan and Roman artifacts found across the surrounding region. The collection gives a sense of the ancient civilizations that shaped this landscape over many centuries.
The regional road 222 links the town center to both Florence and Siena, making it a practical base for exploring the surrounding area. The location offers good access to the Chianti region and the valleys that spread throughout the territory.
The Montecalvario Mound contains four Etruscan chamber tombs from the 6th century BC arranged in a cross pattern around a central corridor. This unusual layout reveals something about how the Etruscan people organized their burial sites.
