Erean Mountains, Mountain range in Province of Enna, Italy.
The Erean Mountains are a mountain range in the heart of Sicily, within the Province of Enna, made mostly of sedimentary rock. The highest point is Monte Altesina at about 1,192 meters (3,910 feet), and the slopes are steep with patches of varying vegetation.
During the industrial era, these mountains held many sulfur mines, and Floristella-Grottacalda was the largest extraction site in the area. Mining shaped the local economy for generations, leaving behind visible traces in the landscape today.
The mountains surround several archaeological sites, including Morgantina, where visitors can still walk among the remains of an ancient theater and marketplace. These ruins show how people lived and traded in this part of Sicily long ago.
The range is reachable via the A19 motorway between Palermo and Catania, with several access points for hiking and outdoor visits. Spring and autumn tend to be the most comfortable seasons for exploring the area on foot.
Lake Pergusa, the only natural inland lake in Sicily, sits within this range and was the first nature reserve established on the island. What surprises many visitors is that an old motor racing circuit still runs along its shore, now largely unused.
