Theatre of Marcellus, Ancient theatre in Sant'Angelo, Italy
The Theatre of Marcellus features two preserved levels of 12 arcades each, with Doric columns on the lower level and Ionic columns on the upper level.
Julius Caesar initiated the theatre project, but Augustus completed its construction in 13 BC and named it after his nephew Marcus Claudius Marcellus.
The theatre became a center for Roman pantomime performances, where artists like Pylade of Cilicia and Bathylle of Alexandria developed new theatrical forms.
The upper sections of the theatre structure now contain residential apartments, while the surrounding area hosts summer concerts near the Roman Ghetto.
The building represents the first known use of fired Roman brick in Rome's architecture, introducing this construction technique from Greek building practices.
