Targa Florio, Historic race in Italy
The Targa Florio was an open road automobile endurance race through Sicily's mountains, known for its technically demanding and tight circuit. The route took drivers through small villages and sharp hairpin turns that required quick reactions and precise driving skill.
The race began in 1906 and became one of the world's oldest motorsport competitions. It continued for nearly seven decades until safety concerns and changing road regulations forced its closure in 1977.
The mountain route through Sicily remains deeply rooted in local pride, especially for the daring driving skill it demanded from competitors. Today, residents speak of the race as a defining moment in their region's character.
The historic course can today be driven by vintage car enthusiasts with approved vehicles, especially during organized events. The winding mountain route requires good driving skills and caution, as roads are narrow and sometimes steep.
Because of the winding route stretching over 60 miles, roadside spectators could never see more than a small section of the race. This made each event unique, where the thrill of participating was far greater than watching.
