Civico Mausoleo Palanti is a monumental structure in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, featuring fluted columns supporting a sarcophagus built from cement and pink granite from Baveno. The building is accessed through a Liberty-style gate that leads down to an underground chamber.
Architect Mario Palanti designed the mausoleum between 1924 and 1928 as a monumental work of Milan architecture. In 1981, it was transformed into a resting place for prominent city residents.
The mausoleum serves as a place of remembrance for notable figures, with its monumental design reflecting the respect shown to distinguished Milaneses. The bronze fittings and Latin inscriptions create a solemn setting for visitors paying tribute.
Access is through the main entrance of the Monumental Cemetery at Piazzale Cimitero Monumentale, where the mausoleum is clearly visible. Walking around the cemetery grounds gives you a better sense of the architectural setting.
The mausoleum holds the remains of Hermann Einstein, father of physicist Albert Einstein, alongside other notable figures such as comedian Walter Chiari. This connection to scientific history makes the site of international significance for those interested in the lives of celebrated individuals.
