ADI Design Museum, Design museum in Porta Volta, Milan, Italy.
The ADI Design Museum sits in a restored tram depot in Milan and displays around 2,000 Italian industrial design objects from different periods. The building offers 5,000 square meters of exhibition space alongside the collections, plus a library, restaurant, and workshop areas.
The building was originally a transportation facility from the 1930s before undergoing extensive restoration. The museum opened in 2021, transforming this historic industrial site into a modern venue for presenting design.
The collection gathers objects that have won the Compasso d'Oro award since 1954, showing which products Italians consider exemplary for design. Visitors see here not just individual pieces, but understand how design in Italy became part of everyday life and industry.
The museum lies between Ceresio Street and Bramante Street and is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday. The spaces feature ground-level walkways with natural light, making it easy to explore the exhibitions.
A glass atrium connects Ceresio Street with Bramante Street, creating an open passageway through the museum. This opening allows pedestrians to cross between the streets while visitors simultaneously explore the exhibitions.
