Birnlückenhütte, Italian mountain hut
Birnlückenhütte is a mountain shelter in the Ahrntal valley in South Tyrol, positioned on a high ridge below the Birnlücke pass and at the foot of Dreiherrenspitze. The facility offers simple overnight accommodations, serves regional meals, and functions as a base for hiking and climbing the surrounding peaks.
The shelter has been part of local mountain life in South Tyrol for many years, serving as a resting point for hikers and climbers. The Untergassmair family has maintained it over time, making it a known destination in this region of the Alps.
The hut takes its name from the Birnlücke mountain pass nearby, reflecting how the building connects to its landscape. The Untergassmair family runs it with warmth, serving regional dishes and creating a space where visitors from different places feel welcomed and at home.
The path to the shelter starts at a parking area in Kasern and takes about two and a half hours, initially following a paved road alongside the Ahr river before becoming steeper with stone steps. The trail remains generally well-marked and manageable for most hikers with basic mountain experience.
This shelter is the northernmost mountain refuge in South Tyrol, sitting on an exposed ridge that sets it apart from other huts. Its position offers a direct view of the impressive north face of Dreiherrenspitze with its glaciers and sharp ridges.
