Collatia, Ancient city and archaeological site near Aniene River, Italy
Collatia was an ancient city and archaeological site located east of Rome, situated between the Aniene River and other early Latin settlements. The remains of this old community lie near present-day Castelluccio, to the south of Lunghezza.
The settlement was founded by early Latins and later fell under Roman rule when Tarquinius Priscus established a garrison there. This takeover marked the shift from an independent city to a Roman-controlled community.
The name Collatia reflects its origins as a Latin settlement, as mentioned by ancient writers. The remains show how people lived here before Rome expanded its power over the region.
The site is located east of Rome near modern-day Castelluccio, where visitors can explore the archaeological traces themselves. Access to the ruins can vary depending on season and conditions, so it is worth checking on current accessibility before visiting.
The ancient Via Colatina ran parallel to the Via Prenestina and was a major trade route that originated from this settlement. This road allowed commerce and communication to flow between distant areas and Rome's center.
