Utia de Ncisles, Mountain hut in Santa Cristina Gherdëina, Italy
Utia de Ncisles is a mountain hut in the Dolomites located at 2037 meters elevation, offering beds and meals to hikers and mountaineers. The building contains dormitory rooms, private rooms, and a dining space where food is prepared daily.
The hut was founded in 1888 by the German and Austrian Alpine Club and ranked among the earliest mountain shelters in Val Gardena. Following World War I, Italian authorities took control in 1921 and the place received its current name.
The hut maintains connections to local mountain farming traditions through its kitchen, where family recipes define what visitors eat. Those passing through notice how the rhythm and style of the place echo the valleys below, creating a link between high altitude and the communities that supply it.
It is best to contact ahead when planning to stay overnight, as beds fill quickly during busy periods. The hut is reached on foot or with climbing gear; there is no road leading directly to it.
The hut carries two names: Utia de Ncisles in the local Ladin language and Rifugio Firenze in Italian, reflecting a divided cultural heritage. These dual names speak to how the valley has lived between two worlds.
