Lago di Massaciuccoli is a protected wetland within the Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Natural Park in Tuscany. The lake spreads across a large area with reed beds, shallow shores, and connected lagoons between the coastal plain and inland hills.
The Medici family turned this area into a hunting reserve in the 16th century before it became part of the Italian royal estate in 1861. This extended period of protection helped preserve the wetland system from major alterations.
Torre del Lago sits between the lake and the sea as the former home of composer Giacomo Puccini, who created many of his operas during his long residence here.
Wooden walkways across the wetlands offer viewing spots for birdwatchers, while cycling paths let you see the largest remaining marsh system in Tuscany. Early mornings or late afternoons are best for visits, when bird activity peaks.
The area preserved its original coastal landscape while the surrounding region underwent extensive land reclamation works. This exception creates a rare place where ancient freshwater and saltwater ecosystems exist side by side.
