Tomb of Caecilia Metella
Tomb of Caecilia Metella, Ancient Roman mausoleum on Via Appia in Rome, Italy.
The cylindrical drum tomb rises from a square base with travertine blocks and tufa, featuring marble friezes depicting military triumphs and pastoral scenes.
Built between 30-10 BC, this monumental tomb holds the remains of Caecilia Metella, daughter of Roman Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus and wife of Marcus Licinius Crassus.
The monument exemplifies Roman funeral architecture through its circular design, decorative elements, and strategic placement along the ancient Appian Way road system.
The mausoleum opens daily at 9:00 AM until sunset, with varying closing times from 4:30 PM in winter to 7:15 PM during summer months.
During the Middle Ages, the Caetani family transformed the tomb into a fortress and used it to collect tolls from travelers passing along Via Appia.
