Catacomba dei Santi Marco e Marcelliano

Catacomba dei Santi Marco e Marcelliano, Ancient catacomb complex near Via Ardeatina in Rome, Italy.

The Catacombs of Saints Mark and Marcellian form an underground burial site between Via Appia Antica and Via Ardeatina in Rome's Ardeatino district. The complex spreads across multiple levels and chambers that held both religious and ordinary burials.

The catacomb originated in ancient times as a burial place for Christians and other faithful, developing over centuries as a cemetery. Antonio Bosio identified and documented the site in 1596, establishing its recognition as an important burial ground.

The burial chambers hold frescoes showing biblical scenes, including depictions of Jonah and the Apostles. These images reveal how early Christians expressed their faith through paintings in underground spaces.

Entry to the site is through organized guided tours that should be reserved in advance. The underground passages require sturdy footwear and reasonable mobility to navigate the different levels.

A four-column crypt with paintings serves as a key identifying feature that helped archaeologists confirm the true identity of this underground site. This architectural detail sets it apart from other catacombs in the area.
