Catacomba dei Santi Marco e Marcelliano, Ancient catacomb complex near Via Ardeatina in Rome, Italy.
The underground burial site extends across 22,000 square meters between Via Appia Antica and Via Ardeatina in the Ardeatino district of Rome.
Antonio Bosio discovered the catacomb in 1596, leading to its documentation in his publication Roma Sotterranea, released in 1632.
The burial chambers contain multiple frescoes depicting biblical narratives, including representations of Jonah, Jesus Christ, and the twelve Apostles.
The catacombs remain under Vatican administration through the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology and require advance reservations for visits.
The complex features a distinctive four-column crypt with paintings that helped researchers confirm the true identity of these catacombs.
