San Giovanni Battista de Rossi

San Giovanni Battista de Rossi, Catholic church in Appio-Latino district, Rome, Italy

San Giovanni Battista de Rossi is a church in the Appio-Latino district featuring clean lines and geometric shapes typical of rationalist architecture from the 1960s. The interior impresses with its simple design and modern structure without unnecessary ornaments.

Construction was commissioned in 1938 by Pope Pius XII and was interrupted by World War II before being completed in 1965. This delayed completion after turbulent years shaped the modern context of the city.

The church houses the relics of Saint Giovanni Battista de Rossi, which were moved here in 1965 from another Roman church. This transfer made the location a special place for believers who venerate this saint.

The building is easy to reach by public transportation and sits in a residential area with nearby tram and bus stops. The church holds regular services and remains open to visitors outside of these times if you want to see its modern interior.

Pope Paul VI elevated the church to titular church status in 1969, granting it a special standing within Rome's church structure. This title made it one of several churches assigned a cardinal as protector.
