Temple of Cargnacco, Catholic parish church in Pozzuolo del Friuli, Italy
The Temple of Cargnacco is a stone-built church with multiple interior naves and a lower crypt beneath it. This underground chamber functions as a memorial space dedicated to those lost during World War II.
Construction began in 1948 under architect Giacomo Della Mea, initiated by military chaplain Don Carlo Caneva upon his return from war. The project grew from a personal desire to honor soldiers' experiences and preserve their memory.
Inside, frescoes, ceramic pieces, and mosaics tell the story of Italian soldiers who fought in the Russian campaign. These artworks serve as a quiet memorial to those distant experiences of war.
The building is accessible on two levels: the main church above and the crypt below, reached by stairs or a ramp. Set aside time to explore both areas without rushing.
The tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the crypt holds actual remains of those who could not be identified, rather than being merely symbolic. This makes the space deeply meaningful to visitors.
