Asti City Walls

The fortification system encircles the historical center of Asti with thick stone walls, towers, and gates positioned at strategic entry points.

The walls originated from Roman defenses in 89 BC, later expanded during the 12th century when Asti emerged as a banking center in northern Italy.

The walls stand as physical evidence of Asti's medieval urban development, connecting multiple districts that formed during the Middle Ages.

Visitors can walk along preserved sections of the walls near Piazza Lugano Paolo to observe the construction techniques of medieval military architecture.

The walls incorporate the Red Tower, a structure that represents the transition between Roman and medieval defensive systems in the Piedmont region.
