Lakes of Fusine, Two glacial lakes in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
The Lakes of Fusine are two separate bodies of water called the Upper Lake and Lower Lake, nestled at the base of Mount Mangart within thick forests of pine trees. Both lakes sit in deep valleys surrounded by limestone rock faces and mountain slopes that rise steeply from the shore.
These bodies of water formed during the last ice age when glaciers slowly moved through the Julian Alps and carved deep valleys into the limestone bedrock. The geological process left behind the two distinct basins that now hold water and define the landscape.
The lakes have different names in three languages due to their location in a region where Italian, German-speaking, and Slovenian communities meet. This multilingual heritage reflects the cultural crossroads that defines the area and its communities.
Access to the lakes is available by a toll road, with free parking areas at each location for visitor use. The paths around both lakes are walkable year-round, though the spring through autumn months offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the area.
The location served as a filming site for The Witcher television series, where the emerald waters and mountain reflections created otherworldly backdrops for supernatural scenes. This connection brought international attention to the lakes and draws visitors who recognize them from the show.
