Church of saint Angelo in Perugia, Early Christian church in Perugia, Italy
Sant'Angelo is an Early Christian church in Perugia built with a round plan and sixteen ancient columns arranged in concentric circles around the central altar. The columns display Corinthian capitals and create a sense of order within the small interior space.
The church was built in the 5th century on top of a former Roman temple site. Over the centuries it was modified around 900 and later served military purposes that left physical damage to the structure.
The church displays tombstones carved with guild symbols that tell the story of medieval craftspeople and their professions in Perugia. Walking around, you can see these stone records marking where different artisans and their families were remembered.
Visitors can access the interior and explore the ancient columns and religious objects throughout the year. The small size of the space allows you to view the architectural details without crowds.
Several column pairs inside bear Greek inscriptions suggesting they came from Villa Adriana in Tivoli near Rome. These stones were transported across long distances and repurposed in this small place of worship.
