Palazzo Gallenga Stuart, Baroque palace in Perugia, Italy
Palazzo Gallenga Stuart is a baroque building in Perugia featuring ornate architectural details across its facade. Symmetrical columns frame large windows that are separated by brick cornices, giving the structure a formal and stately appearance.
Construction began in 1748 under architect Francesco Bianchi, commissioned by Giuseppe Antonori, and was completed in 1758. This baroque project represented an important addition to Perugia's urban landscape during the 18th century.
The building has hosted the Università per Stranieri since 1921, where students from around the world study Italian language and engage with the country's culture. Visitors can observe this living educational mission in the halls and classrooms that fill the historic spaces.
Visitors can explore the building through guided tours that take you through decorated rooms and up to the upper floors. From higher levels, you can look out over the city and get a sense of the building's place in Perugia's urban landscape.
The building contains a small theater where young Carlo Goldoni performed, leading to an adjacent room being named the Sala Goldoni. This connection to the celebrated playwright adds a theatrical significance to the space that many visitors overlook.
