Santa Maria Nuova, Gothic church in Perugia, Italy.

Santa Maria Nuova is a Gothic church in Perugia featuring three naves, a polygonal apse, and a red and white marble entrance portal. The interior layout shows typical medieval church design, with the apsidal chapels along the back and the naves extending forward from the entrance.

The original church was documented in 1285 as Santa Maria di Porta Sole but burned during riots in 1376 and was rebuilt in 1406. The Gothic structure visible today took shape during this rebuilding period and underwent multiple restorations over the following centuries.

The church houses carved wooden choir stalls from the 15th century that were moved here from another local church. These pieces show the craftsmanship valued in Perugia and form an important part of the interior today.

The church is easily reached via Via del Roscetto street and the entrance features the distinctive red and white marble portal. The interior is generally open to visitors, though it is helpful to check local information about visiting hours before your trip to ensure access.

Inside one of the side chapels stands a funerary monument dating from 1479 honoring a local military leader. Few visitors notice this sculpture, which represents an important example of Renaissance memorial art in the city.
