Collegio della Mercanzia, Medieval merchant guild palace in Perugia, Italy
Collegio della Mercanzia is a palace in central Perugia that once belonged to the merchant guild and occupies a significant civic building. Its interior showcases elaborate wooden panels covering walls and ceiling with geometric patterns and symbolic designs.
The merchant guild received this space in 1390 as payment for a municipal debt of 1400 florins. Over time it became the heart of guild activities and remained an important seat for their administration and meetings.
The Justice pulpit features four carved figures representing cardinal virtues: Justice, Fortitude, Prudence, and Temperance, reflecting the values merchants held dear. These symbols showed how the guild saw itself as a moral force in the city.
The location is at Corso Vannucci 15 in Perugia, very close to the Collegio del Cambio and easily reached on foot from the main plazas. Visitors will find the entrance clearly visible on one of the main streets of the city center.
The archive rooms preserve guild registers from 1329 and 1356, documents nearly 700 years old. They also house 17th-century frescoes and artworks by Domenico Bruschi from 1899, connecting the space across different periods.
