Scopello, Coastal village in Castellammare del Golfo, Italy

Scopello is a coastal village positioned about 106 meters above sea level with views toward the Mediterranean, featuring a Norman fortified complex and a central plaza. The settlement spreads between traditional stone buildings and open views of the water that define its character.

The settlement began in Hellenistic times and remained inhabited through the Roman period before becoming a feudal holding. This continuous occupation left layers of building styles that remain visible in the village today.

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie sits at the heart of the village square, serving as the main gathering place for the community. The chapel reflects how faith remains woven into the everyday rhythm of life here.

The best time to visit is from April through October when weather stays reliable and the site is fully accessible. The village sees fewer crowds in late spring and early autumn, making these periods ideal for a more comfortable experience.

A medieval tuna fishery called the tonnara was expanded in the 15th century by Giovanni Sanclemente and displays traces of this specialized fishing craft. The site reminds visitors of the centuries when fishing shaped the economy and daily life here.
