Arena dello Stretto

Arena dello Stretto is a modern amphitheater set on the waterfront of Reggio Calabria with multiple seating levels that face toward the sea. The structure consists of a semicircular design with access ramps on both sides and provides views across the Strait of Messina from its upper sections.

This venue was constructed on the site of the former Porto Salvo harbor after the 1908 earthquake devastated the city. The location represents a symbolic rebuilding of the area and demonstrates how the local community transformed the space following the disaster.

The venue serves as a gathering space for theatrical performances, film festivals, and music concerts that draw audiences throughout the year. Visitors experience how locals use this waterfront location for cultural events and social gatherings.

The venue is accessible through two spacious ramps that connect the lower and upper areas, accommodating visitors with varying mobility needs. Comfortable footwear is advisable since the terrain can be uneven and visitors may need to traverse multiple levels to reach their seating.

At the center of the amphitheater stands a bronze statue of the goddess Athena created by sculptor Bonfiglio, relocated to its current position in 2001. This figure faces the city and creates a focal point that many first-time visitors often overlook.
