This library is housed within the Palazzo abbaziale di Loreto and has its own entrance on Domenico Antonio Vaccaro street in Mercogliano. The building contains reading rooms where visitors can view ancient manuscripts and printed works, as well as spaces dedicated to rotating exhibitions.
The collection was founded in 1126 by San Guglielmo da Vercelli, who brought the Benedictines to this region. From the start, the monks gathered Greek and Latin manuscripts to support their copying workshops and preserve religious knowledge.
The library takes its name from the nearby Montevergine sanctuary and reflects the religious significance that has shaped this place for centuries. Visitors can see how monastic life and the preservation of knowledge remain connected in the way the collection is maintained and presented.
The facility is open Monday through Saturday and offers reading areas as well as photocopying services. Regular exhibitions showcase parts of the valuable collection, so it helps to check ahead for what is currently on display.
