Bicocca, Modern district in northern Milan, Italy.
Bicocca is a district in northern Milan where a modern university campus, research centers, and art spaces stand close together. The area developed on the site of a former factory with visible remnants from the industrial era.
The area was the site of a villa in the 15th century and later developed into a major industrial zone with the Pirelli factory. The shift from industrial site to university and cultural zone began in the 1980s.
The district takes its name from Villa Arcimboldi, which once stood here, and now hosts art exhibitions in former factories. These spaces show how the area has transformed from industrial production to a cultural meeting place.
The area is easily reached by public transportation and has wide pedestrian paths between the various buildings. It is easy to walk around since the paths are clearly laid out with signage available.
Some of the old factory halls were intentionally preserved in their original form and now serve as art galleries. The unexpected mix of raw factory design and contemporary art creates an unusual visual contrast.
