Cappella Cangiani, Catholic church in Rione Alto, Naples, Italy
Cappella Cangiani is a church in the Arenella district of Naples, completed in 1969 to a modern design by architect Alberto Izzo. The building has clean lines and a straightforward structure typical of Italian religious architecture from the 1960s.
The site had been used for religious purposes since the 16th century, long before the current building was erected. The 1969 church replaced earlier structures that had stood on the same spot over the centuries.
Inside the chapel hangs a carved Crucifix by Michelangelo Naccherino, a sculptor active in Naples in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The work draws visitors with an interest in religious sculpture from that period.
The chapel serves mainly as a place of worship for the Arenella community, so visiting outside of service times is advisable. Dress modestly when entering, as with any active church in Italy.
The Naccherino Crucifix was deliberately transferred here from another historic church in Naples to keep it safe. This means a work from the late 16th century can be seen today inside a church built in the 1960s.
