Convitto Pontano alla Conocchia, Convent in Rione Sanità, Naples, Italy.
The Convitto Pontano alla Conocchia is a large multi-story convent building in northern Naples that housed classrooms, chapels, and residential spaces for various functions. The structure contains both religious and medical installations added throughout its long period of use.
The building was founded as a Jesuit college and served this purpose through the mid-19th century. The Jesuits were then expelled from Naples, which prompted a radical change in the complex's purpose during the 1884 cholera epidemic.
The building housed a Jesuit school and later served as a hospital for infectious diseases, a shift visible in its rooms and architectural layout. This dual purpose shaped how the space was organized and used over time.
The building has been closed to the public since the technical institute shut down in the 1980s. Visiting requires special permission or participation in guided tours organized by local groups.
The convent's name comes from a nearby Roman columbarium called Mausoleo della Conocchia, which stood until unauthorized demolition in 1965. The destruction of this archaeological site left only its name as a trace in the neighborhood's history.
