Ponte della Sanità, Road bridge in Rione Sanità, Naples, Italy.
Ponte della Sanità is a road bridge in Naples that connects the upper city center to the lower Sanità neighborhood, crossing over a significant drop in elevation. It runs above rooftops and narrow streets, offering a direct passage between two city levels that would otherwise require a long detour on foot.
The bridge was built in the early 19th century on the orders of Giuseppe Bonaparte, then king of Naples, as part of a broader effort to improve connections across the city. This intervention permanently changed how people moved between the upper and lower parts of the urban fabric.
The bridge officially bears the name of Maddalena Cerasuolo, a Neapolitan woman who resisted during World War II. For people living in the area, it is above all a daily crossing between two levels of the city, on foot or by elevator.
The bridge is easy to reach on foot from the upper city and offers open views over the rooftops of the neighborhood from its span. A historic elevator on one side provides a direct way down into the lower district without needing to navigate stairs or steep paths.
Inside the historic elevator, the walls are covered with a mural by artist Jerico Cabrera Carandang showing two figures in an embrace. Most visitors who cross the bridge never discover this work because they do not take the elevator.
