Church of San Giacomo

Church of San Giacomo is a Romanesque church building in the historic center of Trani with characteristic features from this architectural style. Inside, a single nave contains two altars dating from the 17th century.

The building was originally called Santa Maria de Russis and its construction began in 1143. After the earthquake of 1647, the facade received significant modifications.

The church served as a gathering place for religious confraternities that organized processions and ceremonies within its walls. These community groups left their mark on the spiritual life of the city through their activities here.

The building stands on Via Romito and is easy to locate in the historic center. Visitors should remember that this is a functioning place of worship, so quiet behavior is expected.

The northern facade displays three tiers of carved brackets that depict human figures and animal representations in fine detail. These intricate architectural details are often overlooked by visitors, yet they show how craftsmen adorned the facade with skillful ornamentation.
