Santa Margherita, Mannerist church in L'Aquila, Italy
Santa Margherita church features a single nave with six side chapels and displays a contrasting combination of Baroque decorations with Mannerist structural elements.
The construction of Santa Margherita began in 1636 through the initiative of Forcella castle inhabitants, contributing to the expansion of L'Aquila's religious buildings.
The church interior contains fragments of a Madonna with Child fresco and houses the remains of Saint Equizio in a monumental tomb.
Following the 2009 earthquake that affected numerous structures in L'Aquila, Santa Margherita underwent extensive restoration work scheduled for completion in 2023.
The church facade stands out among L'Aquila's religious architecture with its unfinished surface and substantial stone base structure.
